Navigating the digital age of publishing can be daunting for those looking to expand their current network, and especially so for newcomers to the industry. However, there are distinct opportunities for both authors and editors to connect and collaborate in this remote world.
The First Steps
For anyone just starting out, you’ll need to consider the possibilities that are presently available to you:
• Friends & Family: It may seem simple, but our closest connections are often our best advocates. If they share your contact information with their networks, you’ll quickly expand your own.
• Alumni Contacts: Use your university’s official alumni network platform to find new connections. Attend alumni events or join alumni associations. Reach out directly to new and old connections with genuine messages via LinkedIn or other social media.
Grow Your Agenda
Working remotely gives us the advantage of setting our own schedules, but it can also make it difficult to venture out of our comfort zones to try new things. There are an array of remote opportunities to fit into your schedule that can make a great difference:
• Training Programs: I’ve found great connections through writing and editorial programs. You’ll also come away with new knowledge and possibly a new certification, depending on the program.
• Associations: There are many associations authors and editors can join, which provide direct opportunities to connect, collaborate, and share knowledge.
• Conferences & Events: Although conferences and events are traditionally in person, there are still a vast amount that happen via Zoom or other online access. Events with an open discussion have the most impact. If you attend one of these events, be sure to connect with other attendees online afterwards to continue the conversation and deepen your connection.
